The View Menu and Layouts

Every panel in the workspace can be closed, the canvas included. The View menu, in the top menu bar right after Workspace, is how the main panels come back. Workspace > Layouts rearranges the whole workspace in one step.

The four items

View holds exactly four items. A tick shows the panels that are open.

ItemWhat it brings back
ThinkyThe chat panel, titled Thinky in and the workspace's name.
WorkflowThe canvas, where your nodes sit.
Live StreamThe panel of messages arriving from your data.
ProposalsThe panel of changes waiting for you. The item shows how many are waiting.

The Inspector and a node's own editor are not in View: they come back from the canvas. Clicking a node brings the Inspector back, and a node's editor opens again from the Inspector button that opened it.

While the Proposals panel is closed, a new proposal shows a short notice with a Review button. Review brings the panel back. While the panel is open there is no notice: you can see the new one there.

Where a panel comes back

A closed panel chosen from View comes back floating at the right of the workspace, in its own window, until you dock it. Dock it by dragging its title bar to an edge or beside another panel, or choose a place from its menu's Move to. Once docked it stays where you put it.

If you bring back more than one, each one opens a little lower and to the left of the last, so none hides another. A panel that is already open is shown, and its side opens if it was collapsed.

The Inspector comes back floating too when you click a node while it is closed. It opens beside the node you clicked, never on top of it, and the canvas keeps the keyboard focus.

Layouts you can apply

Workspace > Layouts > Shipped layouts offers five ready-made layouts. Choosing one rearranges the whole workspace in one step. The panels keep what they show: the canvas keeps its zoom and position, and anything you were typing stays typed.

LayoutWhat it shows
DefaultThe everyday arrangement: Thinky on the left, the canvas in the middle, the Inspector on the right, Proposals and the Live Stream along the bottom.
QuadrantsFour equal areas: the canvas top left, the Inspector top right, Thinky bottom left, the Live Stream with Proposals as a tab bottom right.
BuildThe canvas large, with Thinky on the left and the Inspector on the right. Proposals and the Live Stream are closed.
MonitorThe Live Stream large beside the canvas, with Proposals under it. Thinky and the Inspector are closed.
ReviewProposals over the Inspector, beside the canvas. Thinky and the Live Stream are closed.

A layout closes the panels it does not show. Each one comes back the usual way: from View, or for the Inspector by clicking a node. The five layouts are fixed: you can change the workspace after applying one, and the layout itself stays as it was for next time.

Undo a layout change

After a layout is applied, a notice at the foot of the workspace says Layout changed to its name, with an Undo button. Undo puts back exactly the arrangement you had before, including panels you had moved or floated. The notice stays until you undo it, close it, or apply another layout.

Ctrl+Z is not used for layouts: on the canvas and in the editors it undoes your work, as it always has.

Reset

Three resets put things back, from the smallest:

ResetWhereWhat it puts back
Reset locationA panel's menuThat one panel, on the side it started on. Nothing else moves.
Reset to the layout showingWorkspace > LayoutsThe layout you are looking at, as it was applied. Offered once you have changed something.
Reset to the built-in Default layoutWorkspace > LayoutsOpenX's own Default arrangement. Offered while another layout is showing.

Each item names the layout it goes back to, so you always know which one you get. A layout reset shows the Layout changed to notice with Undo, like any layout you apply, and no reset changes a layout you saved under a name.
