Workbench
A workbench is one repo that declares what it does: the tools it offers and the ways they're reached. You declare each tool once, and the same definition serves AI over MCP, code over a REST API, and people through a web interface.
Workbenches and warm queries are peers. A warm query is a tool built from your data; a workbench is a tool built from your code - the triage rule, the release check, the incident runbook. Both run in your tenant and both are callable by every AI your team uses.
A workbench runs with fai run, on your laptop and in OpenX alike: OpenX hosts it by running the same fai run
in your tenant. Workbenches can also build on each other - OpenX wires one into another when it deploys.
Skill, MCP server, workbench
- A skill tells an agent how to do something.
- An MCP server is one way for AI to reach a tool, and it speaks MCP only.
- A workbench is tools written once and reached every way you need: MCP, an API, a web interface.
