Arranging Your Workspace

Every panel in the workspace can go where you want it. This guide moves a panel one step at a time. If a word is new, Docking explains it.

Move a panel

  1. Point at the empty part of the panel's title bar (not a button) and press.
  2. Drag. Once the pointer has moved a little, a box shows where the panel will land.
  3. Drop it on the place you want:
    • the left, right or bottom edge of the workspace;
    • beside another panel, on any of its four sides, to stack the two, each with its own title bar;
    • another panel's title bar, to share one place with it as tabs.
  4. Let go to put it there. To change your mind, press Escape before you let go and the panel stays where it was.

Switch between tabs

Panels that share a place show their names as tabs in one title bar. Click a tab to show that panel. To move a panel out of the group, open its menu and choose a place from Move to.

Resize with a divider

The thin line between two panels is a divider.

  1. Point at the divider and drag it. One panel gets more room and the other less.
  2. A double-click on the divider puts it back at the size it started at.

A panel never shrinks below the size it needs.

Float a panel

  1. Open the panel's menu (the three dots on its title bar).
  2. Choose Float. The panel lifts out over the workspace.
  3. To move it without docking it, drag its title bar (the title, the icon or the empty space, never a button) and let go anywhere: it stays floating where you drop it. It lines up with the workspace's edges and with other floating panels when it comes within a few pixels; hold Alt to place it freely.
  4. To dock it again, drag it onto one of the small guides that show while you drag (a cross of five on the panel underneath, and one on each edge of the workspace) and let go there, or open its menu and choose a place from Move to.

From the keyboard, open the panel's menu and choose Move: the arrow keys move it 10 pixels (hold Shift for 50), Enter places it and Escape puts it back. Top left, Top right, Bottom left and Bottom right in the same menu send it to a corner. On a touch screen the same drag works, with larger guides.

Collapse a side

On a panel on the left, right or bottom, open the menu and choose Collapse. The side folds down to a thin strip with one small button for each panel on it, for example Expand Inspector. Press the button and the side opens at the size it had, showing what it showed.

Close a panel

Press the panel's close button (for example Close Inspector), choose Close in its menu, or middle-click its title bar or tab. Closing never loses the panel's work. To bring it back, see Getting a panel back.

A panel holding words you have not sent, such as a message typed to Thinky, shows a small dot named Unsent changes on its tab and title. Closing it asks first: Save closes it and keeps the words for when you bring it back, Discard clears them and closes it, and Cancel leaves it open. Panels that save as you type, such as a warm query, show no dot and never ask.

On a phone a panel opens as a sheet, and closing a sheet never asks: the words stay in it. The dot shows on the sheet's title and on its button in the bottom bar until you send or clear them.

The same moves from the keyboard

You can arrange the whole workspace without a mouse.

  1. Press F6 to move to the panel, reach the menu button on its title bar, and press Enter to open the menu.
  2. Press Down to Move to and Right to open its list. It names every place a drag could put the panel: each edge, beside another panel on each side, or as a tab with it.
  3. Press Down or Up to a place and press Enter. Escape goes back out.

To resize, press Tab until a divider is highlighted and use the arrow keys. Enter on a divider beside a side panel collapses that side, and Enter again opens it. Every key is on Keyboard Shortcuts.

Switch or reset a layout

A surface's tab drags and docks like any panel: drop it on an edge, beside another panel or on another title bar, so you can set two surfaces side by side.

To change the whole arrangement at once, open Workspace > Layouts and apply a layout, or choose Reset to the layout showing. The panels every workspace has move to where that layout puts them, so Build still closes Proposals and the Live Stream. Every other panel you have open stays open: a surface's tab goes back beside the Workflow canvas, and any other panel floats at the right. Undo on the notice gives back the arrangement you had before. What a layout keeps is on Layouts.
