Accessibility

The workspace panels are built to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, WCAG 2.2, level AA: the standard most buyers and laws ask for. This page says what that means for you in the panels, and how to tell us when something falls short.

What OpenX promises

Three of the guidelines matter most for panels you can move and resize. In plain words:

GuidelineWhat it means in the workspace
2.5.7 Dragging MovementsEverything you can do by dragging, you can do without dragging: a panel's Move to menu docks it anywhere a drag could, and the arrow keys move a node on the canvas.
2.5.8 Target Size (Minimum)Every button on a title bar is at least 24 by 24 pixels, and nothing small sits so close to another target that you could press the wrong one.
2.1.4 Character Key ShortcutsThe one shortcut that is a plain key, Shift+Space, never acts while you type, and it can be turned off.

The panels also meet 2.1.1 Keyboard (every action works from the keyboard), 4.1.2 Name, Role, Value (every button and divider says what it is for and which panel it belongs to) and 4.1.3 Status Messages (a screen reader is told what changed, without moving your focus). Every change to the panels is checked against these before it is released, by people and by an automated checker.

Using the keyboard

Press F6 to move from panel to panel, and Shift+F6 to go back. Tab then takes you into the panel. A divider between two panels is a stop for Tab: the arrow keys make the panels beside it bigger or smaller, and Enter folds a side panel away to a thin strip and opens it again. Every key is in Keyboard Shortcuts.

With a screen reader

Each panel's title bar is read as the panel's name ("Live Stream panel"), and each button names its panel ("Close Live Stream", "Maximise Inspector", "Live Stream menu"). A divider is read as a separator named for the two panels it sits between ("Resize Thinky and Workflow"), with how far across it is.

When you dock, move, maximise, restore, close, fold away, open or reset a panel, the screen reader says what happened once, after it finishes what it is reading, without interrupting your typing: "Live Stream docked right", "Inspector maximised", "Proposals closed". Applying a whole layout is said by its notice at the foot of the workspace ("Layout changed to Monitor.").

Where the focus goes

  • Opening a panel from a menu or a button takes you into it.
  • Clicking a node on the canvas brings the Inspector back without taking you off the canvas.
  • Closing a panel takes you back to what opened it, or, when that has gone, to the next panel F6 would reach. You are never left with nothing focused.
  • Folding a side panel away from its menu takes you to its strip; opening it again from the strip takes you into the panel.

Larger text

There is no separate text-size setting. Use your browser's own zoom (Ctrl and + on Windows, Cmd and + on a Mac). The workspace works at 200% zoom: every panel, menu and window stays within reach, nothing is cut off, and the page never scrolls sideways. On the canvas, the mouse wheel or a pinch zooms the canvas itself, and the browser's zoom keys zoom the whole page.

Reporting a problem

If something in the workspace does not work with your keyboard, your screen reader or at your zoom, email support@fathym.com and say what you were doing and what happened. We treat it as a bug.
