Panel Controls

Every panel and window wears one title bar: the name at the left, the panel's own buttons, its menu, and a close button at the right. See Panels and Windows for the idea; this page lists the controls.

The title bar

PartWhat it is
Name, or tabsOne line. A long name is cut short; point at it to read the whole name. Panels sharing one place show as tabs.
The panel's buttonsButtons that belong to that panel. Each is at least 24 by 24 pixels.
MenuThree dots, named for its panel (Inspector menu): what you can do to the panel itself. See below.
Close buttonAt the right, always grey, named for its panel (Close Inspector). It closes the panel; on a window, the window.
The empty partPress and drag it to move the panel; double-click it to maximise. A middle-click closes the panel.

Every title bar is the same height, 32 pixels, on every panel and window. The space inside every panel is the same too.

The panel's menu

ItemWhat it does
Show on canvasOnly on a node's editor: opens the canvas its node sits on and centres the node. See Node editors and work windows as panels.
MaximiseFills the workspace with the panel. It reads Restore while the panel is maximised.
CollapseFolds the panel's side down to a thin strip. Only a panel on the left, right or bottom has it.
CloseCloses the panel, as the close button does.
Add panelLists the panels that are closed; picking one opens it as a tab beside this one. Shown only when one is closed.
Move toEvery place a drag could put the panel: each edge, beside another panel on each side, or as a tab with it.
FloatLifts the panel out to float over the workspace. A floating panel does not show it.
Reset locationPuts the panel back on the side it started on.

Collapse and Expand

Collapse folds a panel's side down to a thin strip, giving its room to the rest. The strip holds a small button for each panel on that side, for example Expand Inspector; pressing it opens the side again at the size it had. The panel keeps what it was showing while it is collapsed. Selecting a node opens a collapsed Inspector by itself.

Maximise and Restore

Any docked panel can fill the whole workspace for a while. Three ways do it, and each one, done again, puts every panel back exactly where it was, the tab each group showed included:

  • double-click the panel's title bar (its empty part, not a button);
  • open the panel's menu and choose Maximise; it reads Restore while the panel is maximised;
  • point at the panel and press Shift+Space.

Shift+Space never acts while you are typing: in Thinky's box, a field, a list or the query editor it types a space as usual. It can be turned off for people who press it by accident: untick Workspace > Layouts > Shift+Space maximises the panel (Keyboard Shortcuts).

A maximise is only a view. It is never kept as your layout, so reloading the page shows your panels as they were. Clicking a node or choosing a panel from the View menu restores the workspace first, so the panel you asked for is never hidden.

No settings gear

No title bar has a settings gear. What a panel lets you set sits inside the panel, where you can see what it changes: the Live Stream's Clear, connection menu and filter box are at the top of its list, not in its title bar.
